Commercial labs offer many different types of carbon and nutrient analyses, but the differences among them are not always clear making it difficult to choose. Differences between carbon and fertility analyses as well as different types of carbon assessments will be discussed to help you select the right measurement for your needs.
Dr. Julie Howe is Associate Professor of Soil Chemistry and Fertility at Texas A&M University. She received her PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and MS and BS degrees from Texas A&M University. Her research has focused on cycling and fate of nutrients and carbon at various levels ranging from fundamental complexation reactions to field-scale processes. She primarily focuses on the impact of agricultural management practices on nutrients and carbon. She also teaches a large enrollment introductory soil science course, a graduate level advanced soil chemistry and fertility course, and a brewing materials course.
