Recent volatility in corn grain and fertilizer nitrogen prices has made it increasingly important to consider economics in developing fertilizer recommendations, along with soil and cropping system considerations. The University of Nebraska has recently refined nitrogen fertilizer recommendations for corn to reflect these factors in calculating economically optimal N rates for irrigated corn. A Web site is available for producers to input soil and economic information to calculate fertilizer rates. The site also allows producers to upload data files from analytical labs to generate recommendations for multiple fields.
