Farmers have long understood that you can achieve higher yields by planting higher populations where the soil is rich and fertile. Seed companies have identified that in “higher yielding environments” the optimum plant population is higher. The national winners of corn yield contest often have yield that are much above what most farmers would consider normal. What soil properties can be measured to help quantify what make a soil “rich and fertile” and capable of being a “ high yielding environment”? This presentation will explore the relationship of nitrogen supplying power of the soil using the Illinois Soil Nitrogen Test (ISNT) and optimum N rate and population. On farm research plot design using farmers variable rate planters and nitrogen applicators will be presented.
